Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana, is a small college with a student-teacher ratio of just 17:1 which is ideal for experiential learning and individual attention. Through on-campus and online programs, the University offers accredited associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. The most popular programs are elementary/early childhood education, criminology, communications, and systems & decision sciences. The University is broken up into seven colleges: the College of Arts and Science, the College of Business, the College of education, the College of Health and Human Performance, the College of Technology, and the College of Nursing.
The College of Nursing’s LPN to RN program can be completed on campus or online. The Department of Baccalaureate Nursing Completion handles students on the distance education tracks, while the Department of Baccalaureate Nursing is in charge of on-campus nursing students. Programs prepare students to communicate, educate, and advocate effectively within their nursing roles. By the end of the program, LPNs or LVNs in the LPN to RN degree program will meet the requirements to take the RN licensure exam. Most states recognize the LPN to RN track, including California, New York, Florida, and Colorado.
Students entering with an LPN or LVN must have already taken courses in mental health, nursing care of adults, children and families, in addition to courses in basic microbiology, communication, and general psychology. Once accepted into the LPN to RN major, students must complete 41 credits in classes like Nursing in Mental Illness, Nursing Care of Families in Stress and Crisis, and Population-Focused Community Health Nursing. Most classes are a combination of in-class study (or online study) and hours spent in health facilities. Although much of the coursework can be taught out of books, emphasis is placed on students learning from professionals currently working in the field by working alongside them.
