One of the most common desires nurses have is to advance their careers within a health care organization. While years of experience and talent can help in this endeavor, the best way to position nurses for higher paying positions is through advanced education. Nurses who have earned college degrees are more likely to be promoted, and more likely to command salaries that are higher than nurses who have simply passed certification exams.

LPN to BSN bridge programs are designed specifically for nurses who want to obtain a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing degree, but want to do it in a convenient fashion. Bridge programs are extremely useful for LPNs because they do not typically require students to take courses for which they already have nursing experience and knowledge. While it depends on the institution, most LPNs entering a bridge program should be able to test out of several courses. These programs typically include both classroom lessons, and clinical training. Some schools, specifically those with distance education options, offer a significant amount of flexibility within the program. This is perfect for those nurses who may have other work, or family commitments during the course of a week. These programs are accelerated, so they can often be completed in two years or even less. Again, the amount of course hours needed depends on the university, program, and what the degree candidate is able to test out of.

Upon completion of the program, students have received instruction, and been tested on a significant amount of nursing material. Graduates should be aptly prepared to take the NCLEX examination if they so desire. Receiving certification to be a Registered Nurse (RN) is quite the achievement, and often comes with a significant pay increase and more job opportunities. RNs who have obtained bachelor’s degrees are more desirable candidates for management positions within organizations. Finally, any nurse who has aspirations for getting a masters or doctoral degree in the field should start by getting a BSN. This is just one more reason LPNs should consider an LPN to BSN Bridge Program.
